I’ve crossed paths with many people passing through San Cristóbal de las Casas in their travels but few remain as vivid in my memory as Savannah, who I met last fall when she was (couch) surfing her way across Latin America.
What I remember most about the luminous Savannah was her big, bright, brilliant smile and soulful spirit to match. Savannah’s website, Travel Butterfly, is aptly named–she descended upon San Cristóbal full of color and energy, generously spreading her joy wherever she landed, teaching everyone around her about the art of living richly, no matter their budget. Now I anxiously await the next time this Travel Butterfly will fly into my life.
1. Who are you?
Give us a quick heartography of yourself in 50 words or less.
I am a world citizen, on an exciting life journey discovering and actualising my dreams.
2. What do you do?
Describe your heartwork.
The easiest way to describe my heartwork is that I follow my dreams with no exceptions. When I have engaged my mind to an idea, I work at making it a reality. I have realised that everything is about perception; dreams are only unattainable if you believe they are. I believe in myself and my dreams without
question and take great joy in watching everything I desire coming into my reality.
I now travel the world 4-8 months a year and run my own travel website which aims to share my experiences as a traveller with readers.
3. How did you get started as an awesomepreneur?
I think the way that this life started was primarily with a decision; that I wanted to live the best life I possibly could, being the best version of myself that I could possibly be, without regrets.
Consciously fighting against my fears and social restrictions; I realised that the ‘traditional’ life wasn’t for me and that waiting for the stars to align, meant I would never start.
I have always been very connected to my dreams, I was lucky enough to have a mother who encouraged me and showed me that in fact I could achieve anything I could dream of. The dream for me was always to see the world; I am not sure when this dream turned into an addiction but at some point a 2 week holiday per year was no longer enough and I was traveling the world minimum 4-8 months a year.
Since then I have traveled to many parts of the world; exploring, learning new things, experiencing new cultures with mind opening challenges. As the word spread about my lifestyle; people began to contact me for advice about how they could make ‘the change’, ‘break free’ or plan a trip. As I noticed the value of sharing my knowledge a website became inevitable and Travel Butterfly was born.
4. Do you have a day job?
How do you fund your heartwork?
I fund my heartwork by being a project management contractor, this means I am hired by companies to do short contracts of 3-6 months. I use this to make some money in-between traveling.
In the next few years I hope that my heartwork will fund itself which will give me the freedom to really connect my passion.
5. What is your biggest work challenge?
When does your heartwork feel like hard work?
I only feel a challenge with trying to find a better balance between the job I do (where I make my money) and my heartwork. But within the next few years this will become a thing of the past, when my heartwork and money making will become one.
6. What is the best thing about being an awesomepreneur?
Why do you love what you do?
Everything that I have, everything that I am doing and everything that I am living is thanks to millions of experiences, people, the universe and my gift of being able to dream big and see nothing as impossible. All of these things lined up perfectly to allow my decisions to bring me to where I am right now.
I love what I do, as it was first a dream; I dreamt of this life when I was a child and now I am living it. I am thankful every day for the millions of experiences, and decisions that brought me to this point.
I think that when you make yourself proud by keeping the promises that you make to yourself, you feel really fulfilled and happy with your life.
7. What is your #1 tip for working with heart?
What do you want to share with other awesomepreneurs?
Unless you are lucky enough to have a magic lamp your dreams won’t land on your lap. Luck is not a rare and accidental find blessed only to the few, luck like dreams must be created and found.
My tip is that if you are unsure about what it is that you want, ask your heart – “What would I do if I knew I could not fail?”
When you have the answer, make the choice to follow your heart and live the life you LOVE!
Though there are four of us in the following picture, Savannah’s smile is the star of the show.
